And now it 404s
Edit The author has fixed his number notation and removed the mention of 305 million in losses for the year so it is now simply a “WoW is dying because other games are prettier” screed.
I cam across a post on an unknown geek blog about the state of World of Warcraft and if it is dying or not. Maybe it’ll have some facts to back up the belief that the Cataclysm expansion has seen huge drop offs for Blizzard’s game.
First it goes through the good things, selling tons of copies of Cataclysm etc etc. Then it mentions how Blizzard has lost over 3 million subscribers. I click on it expecting to be taken to the source of this claim as it is the first I have ever heard of it. No luck, it is just plain text, no link, no source.
I continue reading and I see some numbers! Too bad I did not take screenshots
First three months 2009: 1,557
First three months 2010: 1,427
Operating income (loss) 2009: (26)
Operating income (loss) 2010: 469
Net income (loss) 2009: 113
Net income (loss) 2010: 418
Followed up by Still, that is a huge loss of net income for just one year (305M).
“Odd” I think to myself, losses are reported in parentheses. So shouldn’t it be a gain of 305 million year over year? Luckily they include a source! I read through and yup, the numbers are right but the analysis is wrong.
I make a comment noting this and go about my day. I come back later to see if there has been a change and there was, not that you would know as it doesn’t say it anywhere on the page that they edited it, but not for the better.
The income listing now reads:
First three months 2009: 1,557
First three months 2010: 1,427
Operating income (loss) 2009: (26)
Operating income (loss) 2010: (469)
Net income (loss) 2009: (113)
Net income (loss) 2010: (418)
The last three lines are directly contradictory to the numbers in the linked file.
I make another comment pointing this out, have it deleted, so I made yet another one. So this is where it sits while I wait to see where it goes next.
